Shining Einstar RockIt

Post by OBNRacerMan »

After using the Revopoint MetroX handheld laser scanner for a while (I also had a Miraco Plus mobile IR scanner from Revopoint), I bought the new Shining Einstar RockIt. My first impressions were very positive, especially the markerless laser scanning capability. The small size and complete lack of cables (the replaceable 21700 battery also fits inside the housing) were also very convenient. Unfortunately, I can't spend much time with this scanner yet; I just made a few videos showing scanning with it.
Also, an example of scanning without markers using RockIt, my DIY Rangevision stationary SLS scanner::

And scanning along markers with parallel lines of a scale model of a car (1:24) without matting (the red color of the body did not “stick” well to blue lasers):

Thank you for this. After having an Arctic Ava, I've wanted to buy a new hand held recently. I've always felt like the revopoint Scanners were a bit of a toy,and that einstear would more likely come out with something good enough that I could justify buying it. I almost bought a Creaform 700 a few months ago, but decided to wait.I've been feeling like we were on the cusp of Asian handhelds that can scan with the level of detail and accuracy that I was getting from my David/Flex system 10 years ago. FWIW the shinnin 3D software seems to be way ahead of the revopoint.

I have mixed feelings about ExStarHUB software. On the one hand, it works quickly (unlike Revo Metro, which doesn't utilize all cores and takes a long time to process). On the other hand, it lacks some functionality, such as ignoring the reverse side when selecting. They also use the one-object-per-project principle (whereas in Rangevision 3Dstudio/ScanCenter and Revo Metro, I could scan several different parts in a single project and then build a mesh from them, selecting the scans I needed. Shining displays all scans when building a mesh, without the ability to choose which to use). There's also no "Save" button as such (you can only go to the main window, but that deletes the built mesh, or close the program, which saves the mesh). I also encountered several situations where the first scan would turn out fine, but when optimizing the cloud for the next scan, the program would throw an error and freeze. After loading, this "second" scan would be empty, and it was impossible to add a new scan or do anything with the resulting first scan. Overall, the software is good, but far from perfect, and I still hope that updates will bring fixes and improvements.
