David scanned by David - work in progress

Post by Curiousjeff »

Got this little figure at the flea market.

I have found the right adjustment for the PointGrey camera and procedure:

Adjust fps until minimum glowing. Then divide number by 4 and apply to shutter speed (I guess this is specific to the PointGrey driver ?).

I am finally happy with the surface quality.

This low cost lens gives good fusion, but maybe not the sharpest scan.

Lens: Tamron M118FM16 Megapixel Fixed-focal Industrial Lens (16mm) [$ 110.-]
Camera: PointGrey Grasshopper3 3.2 MP Mono USB3 Vision (Sony Pregius IMX252)
Camera resolution: 2048 x 1536
Projector: Acer K135
Scan time for projection of patterns: approx 3 seconds
Number of patterns: 22
Calibration panel size: 80 mm (home made, pattern on back of glass mirrors)
Scans: 34
Quality check: 0.6
Outlier removal: 3%
David 4.5.3

P.S. The strange surface near the belly button is my bad paint job. :?

Very nice. What do you mean "Adjust fps until minimum glowing"?

When I was using a rolling shutter with a DSLR (Canon, Panasonic and Nikon), lines would be going across the screen. I made adjustments to minimize those lines.

With a global shutter, you don't see the lines crossing the screen anymore but the images is glowing dark - light - dark -light until you get the right settings.

It's like if the brightness of the screen was going up and down continuously.

This week is the first time that the surface is nearly artifact free. With the fusion process, I almost don't see any more waves.

I am still thinking about that software sync in the article the other day.

Since the PointGrey implementation of the Directshow is limited, I start David, turn off the camera. Open the PoinGrey software, make my adjustements to the camera, close that software and start the camera in David.

I wonder if the sync is modified when the camera video stream is feed to David ?

If it is not, then a sync adjustment by software could be done without needing any modification of David by turning off the video stream, starting a separate software to sync as per the article and then start the video feed in David ?

If this can be done using DIrectshow, then the proprietary DSK of each manufacturer would not be necessary.

I wish I had better programming skills....and time :D

What about the projector frame rate?

So if you camera frame rate is 60fps when the brightness oscillation stops you set the shutter speed in David to 1/15sec?

Micr0, Narmella,

Thanks.

I am happy with the precision during the alignment, the speed and the surface is nearly perfect. The fusion process does removes most of the remaining small waves.

Narmella,

I remember that even with Lestscan, I was having problems with surface artifacts. I am sure this is due to the Acer K135 and it's diamond shaped pixels. I need to reconnect the NEC and give it a try.

I have to admit that the small scale and light weight of the Acer K135 is more convenient for my setup.

I wish I had the LG PF1500....

Impressive results, however 30cm is a rather small part. would you try on a larger object, maybe 1m and above, to see how things go?

@ Micr0,

Sorry, I didn't see your last question previously.

Yes, that's correct.

I set the FPS to 59.846
The shutter to: 15.10ms

The PointGrey software has an "absolute mode" for the input which is 1 by 1 incremental.

I set FPS to 60, then switch to absolute mode and fine tune until the least glowing effect.
I turn off absolute mode, set shutter to 15 ms, return to absolute mode and fine tune.

Finally, all is saved in the camera memory.

The only thing I need to adjust every time I start David is YUY2 with RAW8, for some reason, this increases the fps grab rate (?).

Nevertheless, I cannot recommend the PointGrey because of the lack of dual camera possibility using Directshow.

Using the SDK, it probably would be possible, but I will be better off selling one camera and buying the Imaging Source camera with the same chip.

I am putting that on hold until better times $$$.
