Here's a scan of a 300zx brake caliper.
I did zero prep work prior to scanning. Some of the surfaces look funny due to being too dark or reflective. Just wanted more experience with the software.

Re: Brake Caliper - FS3D
nice, my only tip for most scanning is to use precise merge over smooth merge, and keep the auto-hole fill to a minimum. The manual holefill tools are pretty fast to use. It'll keep alot more details.
Also the HDR option does pretty well for high contrast surfaces. You should try our XTract3D Plugin for Solidworks to convert a scan to CAD.

This was precise merge. Only thing is I went a little overboard with the manual hole filling
I didn't mind since I was learning how to use the hole filling tools.
About HDR...
Evertime I clicked the button the software would throw error. I just assumed it wasn't compatible with Directshow cameras and went on.
Also I would love to try Xtract3d
I currently have a maker license for Solidworks 2020-21.
I'm not sure if your plug-in would work...only one way to find out!

Re: Brake Caliper - FS3D
Probably very likely HDR isn;t compatible with the DSHOW drivers..
Re: Brake Caliper - FS3D
I had the same issue with HDR and DS.
Something to fix, since it would be really useful.
