Could a 3D scanner be used vertically?

Hi everyone!
I have a question.
A 3D scanner like ASUS Xtion pro live could be used vertically? Whats change?
and if I rotate it and also the 2 cameras of 90°? It would be the same as the original?
I don't understand if the horizontal position is essential for the technology to work.
