Scanning car rims and software to make them interact digitally?

Hey all,

Been scanning the forum and web looking for a solution but im a little out of my depth so its time to ask the community ;)

We are a startup company who is looking to sell a product that will clip onto vehicle tire rims. Part of the problem with this is that there are so many different rims out there and they don't all have the same design. The thought is to use a handheld scanner to get a 3d image of the visible part of the rim and then have that model put into software where we can get a model of the product and see if they will mesh together or if there are parts of the rim that interfere.

I have found a number of scanners that i think would do the job just fine, but im not sure how realistic my software expectations are?
Does anyone have any advise or expectations?

Appreciate your time!
