Which equipment do you use for 3D-scanning?

µ Rig of the week

Post by Micr0 » 15 Nov 2016, 15:46

Current 2 camera set up. I tend to redesign things about once a month so who knows how long this set up will last. It's been working really well so I may keep it an focus on making a smaller turntable. The 2 axis Trunion you can partially see in the picture works great but I originally designed it for scanning engine parts and when doing jewelry (which I have been doing recently) I have to be very careful not to wack the projector/cameras.

Glad some of the veterans are making their way back! I notice were using the same tripod lol

I need to save up on a much more heavy duty video tripod one day since the slik it's prone to wobble with 2 legs up

I have a very heavy vintage motion picture camera tripod I bought from a friend. I made a rolling base for it and it very stable and extends to nearly 12ft high. I use it for most of what I do, but It cant get close enough to the turn table for the really small stuff. There are no perfect universal solutions.

use a boom arm but then you have to make sure it has a lock

Hi Micr0,

Do you have an extra lens in front of the projector ?

I have been having problems with alignment and fusion. I believe it is coming from distortion of the close-up lens.

For this setup yes. David should calibrate for for some lens distortion. how close are you and what length lenses are you using on your cameras?

Maybe if Sven would care to comment...... Oh

But I'm sure you could get an answer over at the HP forum...... oh.

I am afraid that the close-up lens have too much deformation for David to handle correctly,

I purchased: Vivitar +1 +2 +4 +10 Close-Up Macro (58mm)

I had hoped that with such a wide diameter (58 mm), the center of the lens would be sharp enough without excessive deformation.

I am not sure of the distance between projector and panel. I am trying to have the projected image nearly outside the 30 mm calibration panel.

On the camera side, I have used good prime lens (Canon 60mm macro lens on the Canon 60D or Pana GH4) since I assumed it made no difference as long as everything was well in focus and correctly framed. Maybe I have been wrong ???

I tried those closeup lenses too. mine were very bad quality with a lot of distortion and chromatic abberation. Only when I use achromats, results are good. Achromats for photography are starting at 50€ per lens. In germany, I found one shop who sells cheaper ones, but they are bare glass, so you have to find a way to mount them. The shop is www.macony-design.de or präzisions-optiken.eu. Maybe someone knows other shops, selling those cheaper?

Indeed, it's a completely different price range then the Vivitar.

On Ebay, I see some going for over $ 250.- (just a lens filter).

To improve, I must get one.

On the site you mentionned, could you point me to the correct section ? There is a lot of choice.

Is there a way to calculate how close I will be able to get with the K135 ?

Mounting should not be a problem (thank 3D printing).

The correct section is "Rundoptiken" -> "Achromat".
It's certainly possible to calculate, but not for me :P
But you already have the closeup lens set? I think the values they give is in dioptres, so its 1,2,4,10 dipotres. focal length = 1000mm / dioptres. So for example your 4 dioptres closeup has 250mm focal length. Just try with your closeup lenses. If you combine them, you can just add the dioptres.
In the shop, the first number is the diameter, the second is the focal length.

They also have some second choice lenses (chipped edges, tiny scratches) indicated with (B). Also look into
"Rundoptik" -> "B-Optiken für Experimente" for "Achromat". I had good luck with those. In the description, look for "Zustand", which explains the flaws. Maybe google translate is enough to check if you can live with it.

By now I have 3 lenses: 400mm, 266mm, 181mm but I haven't tried them yet with the K132, only my old K11.
