Advice on first camera selection

Post by Alonso »

Hi everyone!

I'm anxious to make the jump into 3D scanning and I need a little bit of guidance on selecting my first camera.

The camera models I was looking was looking at are -

IS 33UX265
1/1.8 inch Sony CMOS Pregius sensor (IMX265LLR)
2,048×1,536 (3.1 MP), up to 60 fps
Global shutter
USB 3.0

IS 33UX178
1/1.8 inch Sony CMOS STARVIS sensor (IMX178LL)
3,072×2,048 (6.3 MP), up to 60 fps
Rolling shutter
USB 3.0

FLIR GS3-U3-41S4M-C
2016 x 2016
Frame Rate 18 FPS
Megapixels 4.1 MP
Chroma Mono
Sony ICX808
Sensor Type CCD
Readout Method Global shutter
Sensor Format 1/1.8"
Pixel Size 3.1 µm

Of course the price of the 178 is more attractive compared to some of the offerings from IS and FLIR.

Whatever camera I choose will be coupled with a 2/3" sensor 12mm lens.

So far I already have an Acer k132 projector(with lever mod) to get me started. I higher resolution unit will come further down the road.
Everything will be managed by HP3DScan5.

The main use will be for scanning car parts.

Thank you for your time and feedback!

FYI, the PointGrey /Flir driver does NOT allow the use of two cameras with David / HP 3D.

I think this is also true for Basler.

If you decide to go that route, you should buy an IS camera. Or you could buy a Flir, but the second one will need to be from another brand. I am not sure it is worth the trouble.

I have two Flir with the 1/1.8 inch Sony CMOS Pregius sensor (IMX265LLR), 2,048×1,536 (3.1 MP), up to 60 fps, Global shutter, USB 3.0

Except for the problem mentioned above, I am happy with the result (speed, quality), even though the driver is a mess and I must adjust the camera settings outside of David (cannot make fine adjustments within David).

One last thing, it is not recommended to use a 2/3" sensor lens on a 1/1.18" chip. The image circle will be to small. If you already have the lens, it's fine to play around. I finally purchased this lens for the Flir:

Tamron M118FM16 Megapixel Fixed-focal Industrial Lens (16mm) TA1614MPMF
Price: $113.00

Good luck

Jeff,

This the lens I was looking at.
https://www.1stvision.com/lens/1stvisio ... -1218.html

Data sheet for that same lens
https://www.1stvision.com/lens/1stvisio ... 3-1218.pdf

I don't have the lens yet, so my options are still open.

I am not specialist, but for sure the image circle is not wide enough.

Maybe if you stop-down, it will be ok. I would go with a lens at least made for the chip or larger, but not smaller.

The lens I'm looking at is made for a larger chip then what the cameras have

2/3 > 1/1.8 if my math is correct lol

If the chip was 1/1.18, then yes, a 2/3 lens wouldn't be recommended

oups, your are right, I was reading 1.18 instead of 1.8.

I guess you should be fine then.

Wait for an answer from Micr0, he has a lot experience. He has tested many lens

Jeff, I'm assuming you're using David/Hp3dscan with your FLIR cameras, correct? Have you been able to try out Flexscan3d with them?

I'd like to try out Flex but it doesn't work with IS cameras. Point Grey only ironically.

As for lenses :)

What Jeff said. Make sure the lense is made for the sensor size (or larger) in the camera you are using. If the lense is made for a sensor that is larger, then be aware that you are increasing the effective focal length of the lens.

Before ordering the lens, I'll run some calculations. I know I've come across a calculator or 2 for focal length/view.

As for the cameras, I'm leaning more towards the IS models as David/HP supports them in Stereo mode. The 33ux178 is the least expensive of the bunch and naturally has a rolling shutter but the highest resolution as well.

Is it possible to lower the resolution within the software? Or is a global shutter still the recommended type?
