Hi, I'm searching for a good camera for david 4.
As the title topic, reading this forum, I discover 23UX236 is often used ( Is it similar to david 4 camera ?).
23UX236 has rolling shutter but 23U236 global shutter, which is the best ? Other question: is an ir filter needed even if they are monocromatic cams ?
Last question: where to buy these cams in the web ?
Thank you very much in advance.

When I first started with David (v3ish) the David people would say that a rolling shutter is not the best for scanning. A lot of people were using web cams which all had rolling shutters and were getting pretty good results. The actual David camera was a global shutter and I did own one of those many years ago though all of my other hardware has been third party. I tested the David camera against a logitech c920 I had modified to accept a C mount lens for. The david cam produced better surface quality but the logitec gave me slightly better detail. The david camera scans were overall more accurate in my opinion. Having said all that I can't tell you whether that was from the rolling vs global shutter or what. I think the current mid range David SLS systems are sold with cameras that have rolling shutters so perhaps it is not as much an issue with David v5. I think where it may make a difference is in the speed of capture. I have 2 of the 23UX174's and they have been great. I have found that for best results you really need to match the lens to the camera properly. That is a long topic but suffice it to say I bought good hi definition lenses and don't regret it. As for retailers. I bought my cameras from AV Supply here in the states. They don't do web sales but their sales people were very helpful and quick.

After posting that link, I noticed that they don't list ImagingSource on their web site. they may have dropped the line. LMKL what you find out.

Hi MicrO, thank you very very much for the informations ! I found a reseller of imaging source brand here in Italy at last , so I will probably go for the 23ux174 model ( even if the cost is double than the 23ux236). About the lenses do you have some suggestions for the 60 mm scanning ?

I don't really. You will have to do that research. Look here as I think I have given a good explanation that will cut down you research time. It may be on the old forum. Do you have that link?

One thing I will say is that it helps to buy from companies that have a good return policy. Sometimes specing new hardware can be part trial and error. Make sure you can exchange things if what you ordered isn't perfect for your application.
When I started with the HD cameras I though 12mm was going to be the right lens. but due to the chip size and other factors the spec looked like an 18mm would be correct. it turned out that 14mm was better but Ricoh and Fujinon (the two companies I had lens specs for) didn't make a 14mm with the kind of resolution i needed for the chip size in the IS cameras. I hope you see where things can go......

One other very good option is using DSLR lenses with c-mount adapters. The big problem here is their size. They are very big and heavy compared to C-mount lenses but if you buy name brand, are very high quality.
