I'm shopping again for a high res camera but was given an option to get one in mono. is it really much sharper vs color? It's not 4k but having color would be handy for non scanning as this cam can do 258fps on some lower setting (use it as an action cam)

I think it is not only sharpness but also sensitivity. If you put a color filter in front of every pixel, i suppose that the light intensity that reaches the pixels is 1/3 at most, maybe even less.
And sharpness has to be lower as color and mono use the same sensor with the same amount of pixels. For a color camera, there are different filters in front of the pixels. Then you have to combine signals from several surrounding pixels to get a single pixel with 3 brightness values. For mono, each pixel gives you directly one brightness value.

Hmmm i guess i'll get a monochrome then, the cam is ment for astrology so it's designed for shooting in the dark
