Tripod suggestions

Post by pottersfriend »

So, I'm trying to update my system and starting to look into buying a better tripod. Guessing my equipment (cameras and projector will weigh about 3 to 5 lbs - aluminum rail is about 2 feet long). Does anyone have any recommendations for something relatively stable/strong, adjustable, and hopefully not too expensive? Thanks.

Any of the Manfredo tripods are well made. However I found a tripod was a bit awkward and limiting. Look for a used gantry type stand. They are more $ but are much more versatile.

@Micr0 - Do you have a picture of a gantry stand? Is this what you are using? I'm not sure I've seen anything like that for a scanner/camera before.

Also, did you mean Manfrotto? I'm not familiar with the Manfredo brand.

Thanks.

Yes. Manfrotto. Auto correct?
This is the gantry I made for my rig. (1000mm Calibration panels btw)

What is the angle between the cameras for this setup? Even with a table of 110mm, I need to push the cameras to the very edges of the pipe, 400mm long, on which they are fixed.

P.S. On a question of the author of a topic - I now use a tripod SLIK U2000 - (before that there was a simple Rekam - it is very "flimsy")
Soft: RangeVision DIY, Calibration panel/Rotary tables - RangeVision, Prj: LG PF1500G, Cam: Daheng Mercury MER2-630-60U3M-L (USB3.0, monochrome) x2, Obj: ZLKC FM12036MP5 (F2.8/5Mp/12-36mm) x2. And a handheld scanner Creality Ferret

Not much. I think I had to push them out further to get a minimum distance for successful calibration.

Thanks for the photo. I wasn't sure what to expect, but now that I see it I think I've seen you post something about it before. I assuming it's all steel and stable because of the weight. Are you using a ball head camera mount on the end? Also, how did you get such a large calibration panel square?

Yes steel. Yes ball head camera mount, Yes, very stable.

I have a Bosch digital protractor that has 10" sides. That, and David compensates for a corner that isn't perfectly 90°.
